Kieu Chinh Scholarship Endowment

By DVAN@SFSU, March 2021

We are excited to announce the establishment of the Kieu Chinh Scholarship Endowment in honor of legendary Vietnamese American actress Kieu Chinh. The scholarship will support undergraduate students in the College of Ethnic Studies who have an interest in the humanities and the arts and are committed to engaging with the socio-political complexities of the Vietnamese American community and working for peace and justice in global solidarity with people of color.

Kieu Chinh is a legendary actress with nearly six decades of international contributions to the motion picture industry in the U.S., Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, China, India, Australia, and Canada. Her appearances exceed more than 100 in films and television shows including M*A*S*H, China Beach, Dynasty, ER, NCIS: Los Angeles, A Yank In Vietnam, Operation C.I.A., The Joy Luck Club, Face, and Journey From The Fall. Her honors include The Best Actress Award of South Vietnam (1969), Best Leading Actress from the Asian Film Festival in Taipei (1973), Cinema Delle Donne Film Festival in Italy (2003), and Lifetime Achievement Awards from Vietnamese International Film Festival-VIFF (2003), San Diego Film Festival (2006), and San Francisco Global Movie Festival -Festival of Globe (2015). Kieu Chinh co-founded the Vietnam Children’s Fund which has built 50 schools in Vietnam since its inception to provide a safe and high-quality education to more than 25,000 students annually.

The Kieu Chinh Scholarship Endowment, which will be administered by DVAN@SFSU, affirms for our community that Vietnamese American culture is enriched by writers, poets, artists and community organizers conscious that their experiences are connected to that of other people of color.

We share our deep gratitude to a member of our DVAN community whose generous gift honors Kieu Chinh’s legacy and supports student scholarships in perpetuity. We look forward to celebrating in community our inaugural award recipients.
