Message from the Dean

March 17, 2020

Dear Faculty and Staff:

I know we are facing challenging times with COVID 19. Worry and uncertainty occupy our minds as we juggle children, elders, our students, and our own vulnerabilities. A number of you have already shared stories of your students and their parents becoming suddenly unemployed or homeless. For sure, our communities are particularly hard hit by public health crises.

Let us not forget, however, our incredible collective strength as survivors of forced displacement, slavery, exclusion, state violence, and mass incarceration. Draw courage from our histories of surmounting the insurmountable and know that your work as instructors and higher education professionals is particularly critical in this moment. We are first responders who meet our students and shepherd their safe passage into a better world for themselves and their communities. Over the past several weeks, all of you have demonstrated an enormous commitment to the university by fielding a deluge of inquiries, transforming your classes, volunteering your expertise to train your peers, or even answering a midnight text from me. I can’t thank you enough for your insistence to meet our challenges with incredible generosity and dignity.

As we embark on a period of remote learning and off-campus administrative operations, let us continue to draw strength from each other and provide, as best we can, a stable learning environment in the midst of incredible instability.

In gassho,

Amy Sueyoshi
