Dear Colleagues:
The rain has stopped, and spring is here. We have six more weeks left until the end of the semester. We have experienced many transitions in the Dean’s office with the passing of Catriona. We are grateful for Interim Associate Dean Mai Nhung Le joining us to support the various tasks and activities in the college.
We have several college-wide activities happening in the next few weeks including:
- All-College Virtual Career and Graduate School Faire, Friday, April 12th from 10-12 noon. Please encourage your students to attend.
- Memorial to honor and remember Catriona Rueda Equibel, Friday, May 3rd, 10 am-2 pm.
- All-College Undergraduate Research Symposium, Wednesday, May 8th, 1-3 pm.
- All-College Graduate Celebration, Friday, May 24th, 11am-1pm.
- All-College Faculty retreat scheduled for June 5-6, 2024 at Westerbeke Ranch in Sonoma, California.

COES Virtual Career Fair, Friday, April 12th, 10 am-12 pm: The COES Virtual Career and Graduate School Fair is an opportunity to aid students in taking the next steps in their journey by presenting them with tangible options for what they can do after graduation. Students can connect with employers and graduate school admissions representatives at the virtual fair.
COES Undergraduate Research Symposium, Wednesday, May 8th, 10 am to 2 pm: The COES Undergraduate Research Symposium allows undergraduate students to showcase creativity, achievement, research, service-learning, and community-based research. Students across the college can present their work through posters, oral presentations, or creative mediums.
Study Circle and Food Hub
Responsive Education for Access, Community, and Hope (REACH) and Access, Retention and Community (ARC) peer mentors will host study circles on Mondays to Thursdays from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM in EP 100. If your students need a quiet study space or extra support, please send them to the study circles. Study circles will start on Monday, February 2nd.
The College of Ethnic Studies is now a food hub! Food support is available to students Monday through Thursday from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM in EP 100. The Food Hub is sponsored by Basic Needs
55th Commemoration Events
The "Evolution of Solidarity Since the 1968 SFSU Student Strike and Oral History Archive Reveal" will take place on Tuesday May 14th from 11:00 AM to 1:00PM on the 5th Floor of the Admin Building. For the last two years, COES students and faculty have been working on an archive of oral histories. This archive will be discussed and highlighted. A lunch will be reserved. Please RSVP here.

College of Ethnic Studies All-College Retreat
College of Ethnic Studies faculty are invited to an all-college retreat set for June 5-6, 2024 in Sonoma, California. The theme of this retreat is “Collaboration.” All tenure track and tenured faculty are expected to attend. We are also inviting lecturers (with entitlements) to attend as well. We will be focused on all-college collaborations in particular our degree programs, curriculum, teaching development, professional development, and wellness. Please use the RSVP Form.

Tutoring and Additional Support for Students
The Tutoring and Academic Support Center (TASC) provides multiple resources for students. Consider letting students know about their services in your syllabus, through other course materials, and making referrals. Sometimes life presents students with challenges that interfere with their academic work. If you are concerned about a student’s well-being you can complete a Dean on Call Referral Form or refer the student to the Action Care Team. For emergency financial crises, student can apply for support through the Hope Crisis Fund. Basic needs resource and other helpful connections can be found at Student Resources at SF State.
CEETL
CEETL invites faculty and staff colleagues to the WE Wednesday events, held monthly during the lunch hour. The purpose is to hold some time and space for colleagues to come together and share interests, cultivate rest and joy, and build community. CEETL is especially inviting folks interested in gardening, restoring relationships, pet therapy and crafting to join, experience, share and connect. Chicken and Juice was held in the Rosa Parks Room and was filled to capacity. Recent publications include Donela Wright's chapter, "Making Gumbo: Africana Studies and HBCU's at the Crossroads" in Africana Innovations in Higher Education. Telisa King co-authored a journal article, “Virtual BUILD Research Collaboratory." Mark Davis has a forthcoming chapter in the Black Fire - This Time (Volume 2) anthology and also co-moderated a panel at the California Faculty Association. Antwi Akom presented at the Provost’s Arts and Lecture Symposium on Health Equity. Dorothy Tsuruta and Sharon Jones presented at the National Council for Black Studies National Conference the work of Dr. Nathan Hare and his contributions to Black Studies. Tiffany Caesar and graduate student Sydney Jackson led a roundtable on the SFSU 1968 BSU/TWLF Student Strike: Students' Archival Experiences. Dorothy Tsuruta was invited to speak on “Doing What Must Be Done, When It Must be Done” at the Modern Language Association (MLA) annual convention and Crystal Edwards presented at an international conference in Montreal Canada. In a January 6th Associated Press story, Abul Pitre weighed in on a new law in Florida constraining the teaching of American history at public colleges. Dr. Dorothy Tsuruta was honored at the National Council of Black Studies with one of the highest achievement awards.
Edwardo "Eddie" Madril, a long time lecturer in American Indian Studies, joins the department this Fall 2024 as an Assistant Professor. Madril is completing his Ph.D. in Indigenous Performances at the Auckland University of Technology in New Zealand. Madril brings experiences and expertise in the arts, music and performance. Madril is also the founder and longtime Executive Creative Director of Sewam American Indian Dance.
AAS is hosting a comfort women related event titled Ten Thousand Tears of Lamentation on May 5th at 2PM at McKenna Theatre and will feature various dance performances from Korean, Filipino, and African American communities. On April 10th, an event was hosted in collaboration with AAPI student services. This was an interactive art creation event in the Garden of Remembrance commemorating students incarcerated during WWII. Congrats to AAS faculty - Arlene Daus-Magbual, Kira Donnell, Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales whose articles who were recently published in the latest issue of AAPI Nexus. At the Asian Pacific Americans in Higher Education presentations by AAS faculty included Loan Le, Mai Nhung Le, Arlene Daus-Magbual, Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales.
Afro-Cuban poet, Nancy Morejón will be reading at the Poetry Center, Wednesday APR 24 at 2PM. Carolina Prado will be offering LTNS6 99: Independent Study (Topic: Latinxs and the Environment) which will be taught at our beautiful Sierra Nevada campus during the summer. Students will get to camp and hike as they learn about Latinx environmental issues in California. Michael De Anda Muñiz reviewed Chicago-based artist Maria Gaspar’s newest exhibition, “Compositions” in the Intervenxion publication. In February, Bárbara I. Abadía Rexach was cited in article "There’s more to Puerto Rico than salsa dancing: Eight songs and a podcast to help outsiders understand the territory" in the online news magazine El Pais.
Congrats to Ponipate Rokolekutu for receiving a $460,000 grant from the California State University Chancellor's office titled "Pacific Islander Student Initiative" and to Jason Ferreira for receiving a $126,000 grant from the University of California Regents titled "Advancing Climate Resilience through Youth-led Action Research in East Oakland, CA.
